LI man sentenced for stabbing ex to death in front of 2-year-old son

A Long Island man was sentenced to up to life in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in front of their 2-year-old son, prosecutors said Wednesday.

José William Funes-Zabala, 44, of Roosevelt, pleaded guilty late last year to second-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child in the 2024 stabbing of 29-year-old Brenda Guadalupe Alfaro-Alcantara.

Alfaro-Alcantara was found by Nassau County police at her Hempstead home with multiple stab wounds on the night of Oct. 5, 2024. Her ex-boyfriend, Funes-Zabala, was arrested the following day by members of the Nassau County Police Department Homicide Squad.

According to investigators, Funes-Zabala went to the victim’s Botsford Street apartment to visit their young son the day after an order of protection against him had expired.

After arriving, Funes-Zabala learned Alfaro-Alcantara was dating someone else and began arguing with her.

The altercation quickly turned violent, and Funes-Zabala stabbed the victim more than 30 times in her bedroom in front of their child, investigators said.

He then left the apartment with blood on his face, leaving their son — uninjured but covered in blood — behind. The child was later found by relatives, who became concerned after they were unable to contact Alfaro-Alcantara.

After initially pleading not guilty, Funes-Zabala changed his plea on Oct. 29, 2025, online court records show.

He was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison.

“This monster slaughtered the mother of his child as his toddler son watched — a little boy whose final moments with his mother were filled with terror, anguish and blood,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said Wednesday, referring to the “unimaginable horrors the defendant forced upon his own son.”
